After being reelected last weekend, Recep Tayyip Erdogan, the president of Turkey, took the oath of office on Saturday, thereby extending his reign for a third decade.
Erdogan said, “During a live-streamed ceremony in the parliament in Ankara, I, as president, swear upon my honor and integrity before the great Turkish nation and history to safeguard the existence and independence of the state.”

Erdogan, who has held office the longest, earned 52.2% of the vote in a runoff election on May 28. The majority of polls predicted his defeat, but he defied those predictions with an electoral victory. Despite the perceived negative impact of a cost-of-living crisis on his chances, he still emerged victorious.

With a second five-year term, Erdogan can keep up his current initiatives to strengthen Turkey’s position as a regional military force.
When Turkey faced its worst economic crisis since the 1970s, the 69-year-old Erdogan was chosen as the prime minister. Erdogan’s AK Party won the election.
