India and the World Food Programme (WFP) signed a humanitarian food aid deal, in which the Indian government will supply 10,000 tonnes of wheat to the Afghan people.

Elizabeth Fore, Representative and Director of the World Food Programme in India, and JP Singh, Joint Secretary of the Department of Pakistan, Afghanistan and Iran in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of India, signed this Memorandum on Thursday, April 24 in Mumbai.

According to a statement that includes a link to this agreement, the 10,000 tonnes of wheat deal is the fifth cargo of humanitarian aid from India to Afghanistan to pass via Chabahar port.

According to Elizabeth Fore, India’s help is a lifeline for families in need and a crucial component of the WFP’s support for millions of people in Afghanistan.

Additionally, India gave 40,000 tonnes of wheat to Afghanistan last year. According to the joint secretary of India’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs for Pakistan, Afghanistan, and Iran, the nation has “fulfilled its commitment.”

WPF has already issued a warning that there is not enough food for 19.9 million people in Afghanistan. Meanwhile, the group issued a dire need for $800 million over the next six months, warning that the people of Afghanistan face the greatest risk of hunger.

The World Food Programme stated that if humanitarian aid is not sustained, hundreds of thousands more Afghans will need help to survive, and catastrophic hunger will knock at Afghanistan’s door.

Since the Taliban took control of the country, Afghanistan’s poverty rate has seen a significant increase, rising from 6.3% in 2019 to 28.3% in 2023.
