The Dangerous Intersection of Religion and Politics in Pakistan: A Case Study of Power and PropagandaThe Dangerous Intersection of Religion and Politics in Pakistan: A Case Study of Power and Propaganda

When Bajwa was made the COAS, rumors made the rounds, like they typically do, insinuating that he and some members of the family were Ahmadis, and the all-powerful Chief had to hold a Milad, inviting senior Pen Di Siri affiliated Barelvi clerics to dispel that image.

At his house no less. It was also alleged that his father was buried in Rabwa (when in fact he was actually buried at Cheemianwala).

Imagine this! That the most powerful person in the country has to give PROOF that he was a good Muslim.

Likewise, when the new Chief was up for selection, I remember rumors here that said that he was a Shia (not that that should be a problem) but quickly his Raasikh-ul-aqeeda Sunni (read the next word with emphasis) HAFIZ credentials were bandied about.

Now we have revelations that people who did not like the current boss got into the FIA database to get dirt on his family (i.e travel history to Iran) to tell the Saudis that he’s trouble and should not be helped in the elevation process.

Look what weaponization of religion (the Barelvi Pen Di Siris who use blasphemy as vehicle of chaos and Jihadi Deobandi fundamentalists) for narrow strategic, tactical, political and social engineering has got us in to.

They probably never thought it’d spill over to their background, and I know it is too much to ask and expect, but one hopes that they finally come round to recognize their follies and scale back, and ultimately, shut down the religion as a means to strategic ends ENTERPRISES for good.
